The crust of Cathaysia: Age, assembly and reworking of two terranes

چکیده
U–Pb dating and Hf-isotope data from detrital zircons have been used to analyse the crustal evolution of the eastern and western arts of the Cathaysia Block in SE China. Zircons from the Oujiang River in eastern Cathaysia indicate that the basement is ominantly Paleoproterozoic (1850–1870 Ma, 2100–2400 Ma) in age with minor Archean components; it was extensively reworked n Jurassic–Cretaceous time (100–155 Ma) to produce the widespread Yanshanian magmatic suite. Both the 1850–1870 Ma event nd the Yanshanian magmatism show wide ranges in Hf-isotope composition, consistent with mixing between crustal and juvenile agmas. Marked downstream changes in the relative proportions of zircon age populations emphasize the care required in using etrital zircon data to estimate continental growth rates. Zircons from the North River indicate that the crust of western Cathaysia was enerated mainly during Neoproterozoic time, although it contains some Archean (2500–3500 Ma) to Mesoproterozoic components. his crust was strongly reworked during Caledonian (ca. 450 Ma), Indosinian (ca. 240 Ma) and Early Yanshanian (ca. 160 Ma) hermal events; there is little evidence for juvenile crustal growth in any of these events. Although the Yanshanian granitoids of the astern and western parts of the Cathaysia give similar mean Hf model ages (consistent with published Nd model ages), this is a oincidence; they have different crustal sources. The distinct patterns of crustal evolution suggest that eastern and western Cathaysia ay represent separate microcontinents, accreted to the older Yangtze craton and transposed by extensive strike-slip faults. 2007 Elsevier B.V. Seismic Evidence for a Geosuture between the Yangtze and Cathaysia Blocks, South China
South China, composed of the Yangtze and Cathaysia Blocks and the intervening Jiangnan orogenic belt, has been central to the debate on the tectonic evolution of East Asia. Here we investigate the crustal structure and composition of South China from seismic data employing the H-k stacking technique. Our results show that the composition and seismic structure of the crust in the Jiangnan orogen...
متن کاملArchean gold mineralization synchronous with the final stages of cratonization, Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia
Sm-Nd ages of pegmatite dikes that crosscut gold-bearing structures in the southern Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia, provide minimum age constraints of 2640 6 11 Ma, 2628 6 10 Ma, and 2620 6 36 Ma for gold mineralization at the Westonia and Nevoria (Yellowdine Terrane) and Scotia (Norseman Terrane) gold deposits, respectively. Similarly, a post–gold mineralization dike at Westonia has a U-Pb ...
متن کاملCompression-extension transition of continental crust in a subduction zone: A parametric numerical modeling study with implications on Mesozoic-Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the Cathaysia Block
The Cathaysia Block is located in southeastern part of South China, which situates in the west Pacific subduction zone. It is thought to have undergone a compression-extension transition of the continental crust during Mesozoic-Cenozoic during the subduction of Pacific Plate beneath Eurasia-Pacific Plate, resulting in extensive magmatism, extensional basins and reactivation of fault systems. Al...
متن کاملDiversity in early crustal evolution: 4100 Ma zircons in the Cathaysia Block of southern China
Zircons are crucial to understanding the first 500 Myr of crustal evolution of Earth. Very few zircons of this age (>4050 Ma) have been found other than from a ~300 km diameter domain of the Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia. Here we report SIMS U-Pb and O isotope ratios and trace element analyses for two ~4100 Ma detrital zircons from a Paleozoic quartzite at the Longquan area of the Cathaysia...
متن کاملExtensive reworking of Archaean crust within the Birimian terrane in Ghana as revealed by combined zircon U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopes
Located in the southeastern parts of the Baoulé Mossi domain of the West African Craton, the Birimian terrane in Ghana is known to consist of predominantly juvenile crust emplaced during the Eburnean orogeny. Here we present novel coupled zircon U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotope data from nine Birimian granitoids intruding different domains from northwestern, western and southeastern Ghana. Sub-chondritic...
